Time is of the Essence

By Kiara Durham

November 19th the school board will be meeting and discussing the possible change of middle school starting times, which they hope to enforce after winter break but the changes could possibly be pushed to Fall 2010.

It all began with a common problem all schools face at the start of a new school year, tardiness of buses. Soon this simple, often overlooked occurrence became a setback as months passed, causing students all over the district to be late, not only to school, but getting home, too. Who’s to blame? Apparently, no one. Due to the 5 different sets of start times present in the district, the transportation time frames were very slim, causing the problem that our school board faces today.

Many solutions were thought of and tried: moving times earlier or later, excusing late children, and the most expensive, $100,020 toward extra buses. This was thought to be the only answer to the predicament until the idea to have the middle school start times sooner was brought to attention. How much earlier? The board is considering, ten, fifteen or twenty minutes prior the current start time. There is a survey on the board website for parents to take, which according to Barb Brown, director of communications, will make a difference in the final decision. Parents are also more than welcome to attend the school board meetings, which are always open to the public
