Fantastic or Frightful? The Raptor Bell

By Julia Chen

As the shriek of a raptor cuts through the air, people all over the school have mixed reactions to this obvious show of school pride.  According to a small scale poll, students are divided in their opinions on whether the raptor shriek is fantastic or frightful.

This siren that ring through the air followed by a raptor’s shriek both begins and ends the school day, and has also gotten the nickname of “raptor bell.” The raptor bell can be seen in many different ways. “…it symbolizes that we are free, just as the caged bird sings once it is free from the cage,” says Alec Wood, who contributed a poetic and positive view to the raptor’s cry. On the other hand, there are comments such as “annoying” and “embarrassing” that illuminate the opinions of those who are inclined to petition for the raptor shriek to disappear. However, some are satisfied with the current “raptor bell.” Mrs. Agrimson, one of the librarians, comments that before the school year began the raptor bell was much louder. The comparative quiet of the raptor shriek may contribute to why some of the staff isn’t as averse to keeping the raptor bell. As to the student population, the opinions are as divided as the colors black and white.
