First Year Squad Surprises Many
.
October 31, 2009 marked the first official cheerleading competition for East Ridge High School. The competition took place at Lakeville North High School and included many squads from all the surrounding areas. High hopes, high spirits, and high ponytails came along with the East Ridge squad, made up of twenty girls. Having practiced hundreds of hours, the day seemed long awaited. Among other squads that came to compete was Woodbury High School’s squad (East Ridge’s rival school). The East Ridge Squad is coached by Cindy Lambert, of Woodbury, Minnesota and captained by Gabby Taylor and Erika Jensen.
The day started on a high note for the girls, they would perform near the end of the day when the judges would have their routine fresh in their minds. When it came time to go on, nerves were obvious. In the next two minutes and thirty seconds, a dance routine and a cheer would decide the squad’s standings in all future competitions. One mistake could cause a stunt to fall or a dance to look sloppy (the judges score badly for these things). As soon as the music began, all nerves went aside and the East Ridge Squad was ready. They hit each motion with confidence and pride. Though minor mistakes and missteps were made throughout the performance, the smiles never left their faces. The routine concluded, leaving East Ridge’s fans on their feet, cheering loud for their squad. The competition squad came off the floor with beaming grins and tears of joy. The excitement of a well completed routine was obvious. At the end of the day, East Ridge High School was awarded a first place trophy in their division! The girls were overjoyed and Cindy Lambert, their coach, was so proud. The squad will compete in their second competition early this November, and we look forward to seeing their routine performed once again!
